In this SUCCESS Talks series, Harvard professor Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, explains how happiness can be subjective but ultimately, in our own hands to control. “Only 10% of long term levels of happiness are predicted by our external world, which means 90% of happiness is how we process our world,” Achor says.

I couldn’t agree more. I have tried to explain this way of thinking and handling challenges to people for quite some time. I think people have felt frustrated with me at times thinking that I was not acknowledging some negatives in my life or looking at things through rose colored glasses. They didn’t understand why I was not ANGRY, resentful, etc.
I explained that while I was fully aware of the situation I found myself in, I needed the strength, and fortitude to take care of my kids, maintain my job, and many other responsibilities. While treading water, no one would choose to put weights on their ankles. To me that is exactly what negative thoughts would have done… PLUS. It made me feel worse. Why would I choose something that would not only make me feel worse, but would also effect my ability to be a strong, positive role model and take care of responsibilities. I have been a youth minister, talked to many people going through divorce and only hope I have helped them cope in some way. I actually went on to get my degree in counseling and would like to possibly be a motivational speaker or counsel at some point. Thanks for what you are doing. This caught my attention today at work and made me smile. I listened to the short video and again – couldn’t agree more! Sandi
